Embarking on a new adventure

 Kia ora, hallo, and hello....

 It's been almost 12 months since my WPCA journey began, and the experiences have been such an adventure I've decided to join my students in blogging my own recount of the journey.

 The idea for the Wesley Intermediate WPCA program was planted during conversations at an Outdoor First Aid course in 2018.  Over the next six months I researched, brainstormed and held discussions with the Leadership team and the Board of Trustees at Wesley Intermediate before launching the program in December 2018 with a presentation at a school assembly. 

 The program is being offered to Year 8 students with a combination of key components: leadership skills, reflective thinking, life skills, challenge and adventure, community service, passion projects and mentoring. The students accepted into the WIS program already demonstrate a solid understanding of our three school values:  Respect Self, Respect Others, and Respect the Environment. The WPCA program is based upon six more values: 
Courage
Teamwork
Resilience
Compassion
Identity
Enthusiasm

 The program launched with seven inaugural "Pikelets": Josh, Zoe, Lizzie, Kaden, Elizabeth, Adriana and Helene. The weeks have flown by, full of adventures, new experiences, paperwork, emails... and lots of talking! This group love to talk!

 The following posts will capture some of the highlights from Term One, 2019... and then I'll have caught up to the present day and will be able to blog events as they happen.

An Underground River

Our (expected to be the final) Outdoor Challenge was epic , and I am looking forward to making this an annual event. We drove south out of Auckland, leaving the motorway at Mercer and driving for 50 minutes through the stunning Waikato region to a gorgeous spot 3 kilometres from the coast. We were going  caving ! The Nikau Cave is situated on a farm belonging to our hosts, Philip and Anne. The idea of walking through an underground river for one kilometre was a little daunting, not that the Pikelets wanted to admit it! The dark yawning gape of a cave mouth that greeted us was gentled by the song of native birds and the trickling of a gentle stream as it played its music across the rocks. The stream flowed out of the cave, and that's where we were going! Our time underground was amazing. The first third of the cave was the most difficult, kind of like exploring rock pools at the beach - in the dark! The soft knocking sounds as heads bumped on the ceiling made us grate...
